Girl Guides are all for a better world

- KEAGAN MITCHELL keagan.mitchell@inl.co.za

CLIMATE change, gender equality and taking action in improving the world, are some of the key cornerstones of being a Girl Guide.

In light of their work, they will celebrate Guide Sunday, a guiding tradition where members from a specific area meet once a year to renew their promise and gather in friendship.

The event, on February 20, will also see unit ceremonial flags paraded. The service will embrace all faiths.

This year’s theme is about the environment and how girls and women can make a difference.

Mia Kruger, 13, from Monte Vista Girl Guides said: “On Guide Sunday, I hope to spend time with girls from our district, sharing and learning new things. I am going to take a friend to Guide Sunday, so that she can see what it is all about.

“I would love to see more girls join the movement as I know how it has helped me grow and develop.”

Kendra Herbst, 12, from Bothasig Girl Guides said: “Our Guide Sunday symbolises pride for Girl Guides and shows we are proud of our founders and the achievements of Girl Guides.”

District commissioner at De Grendel Girl Guides, Tanya Prinsloo, said: “We will be celebrating Guide Sunday in our districts. De Grendel District, for example, will be hosting an interactive event in a park in Table View, where girls will partake in various fun activities as part of the World Thinking Day theme.

“Girls will learn through games and activities about the link between climate change and gender equality. They will learn about environmental issues and explore how to speak out and take action for a better world.”
