WARRIORS for Change, a local youth and upliftment movement that fights against gender-based violence (GBV), will host Comedy Curves Night at the Portland Indoor Centre on March 25.

The event will focus on the LGBTQ+ community, the issues they face in South Africa, and body-positivity awareness.

Co-founder of the movement Shaundre Lottering said Comedy Curves Night was about highlighting the difference between people and the importance of everyone being given the same amount of respect.

“The purpose is to bring male, female and the LGBT community together and put an end to the stigmas attached. It is important to make society aware of LGBT, because they are also human and don’t deserve to be treated differently,” said Lottering.

“Many times children suffer at the hands of bullies because society has taught us that being gay is wrong, and this leads to depression. Bringing awareness of body positivity will encourage people to love themselves and they will, in return, love others. These topics are important because they are often misunderstood,” Lottering said.

“We hope to gain unity among people in order to fight GBV together, stop victim blaming and body shaming. Together we can make a change, and it starts with us loving the next person.”

Garth Arnolds, who was crowned first prince at Mr and Miss Cape Town Pride 2022, said: “These events are so important to our community, as this is a celebration of those who came before us and had to fight for what our generation can enjoy. It’s also an opportunity to show society that we are here and we are not going anywhere. Love is love, no matter the race and gender.

“As a society post-democracy, we are only now starting to become comfortable with people wanting to be true to themselves and embracing who they are, what they feel and how they look. Not everyone is as accepting of it, however, but we are comfortable with who we are,” Arnolds said.
