ZULÉKA Smit’s passion for life and her interest in young people inspired her to write Ben Gaan

Skool Toe.

The book tells the story of a boy called Ben who is insecure. He has no friends at school and the other children are are often nasty to him. However, his mother always tells him that Jesus loves him.

One day, his teacher mentions that the pupils will be staging a concert.

It is hoped that Ben will get the opportunity to make friends at through this event.

Smit said her beautiful story about the difficulties of going to school for the first time is based on her many years in education and her experiences with her own children.

“This book is ideal for use in the classroom and will help teachers to start conversations with their young pupils about making friends, fears and bullies.

“Parents should read the book with their children,” she said.

The story is aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 8.

“I enjoy the illustrations and the children’s faces when they realise they Identify with Ben.

“Reading, vocabulary and sentence structure are important and open up a new world,” Smit said.

The book is R150. If you would like a copy, visit www.lapa.co.za.
