A message from Shaun Simpson – Headmaster of Rondebosch Boys’ High School

‘To grow higher and wider, we need to take stock of where we have come from, to recognise what we are now and to have a vision to look forward to.’

-

THERE is no doubt that being old is complicated, and 125 years seems to be a good measure of an “old school”. However, age is a badge of honour and a signifier of wisdom. There are, however, certain connotations of “old school” which we would wish to avoid, and there are many good reasons to be critical of the “old world” out of which our school grew. To grow higher and wider, we need to take stock of where we have come from, to recognise what we are now and to have a vision to look forward to and work towards. young men of Rondebosch are confident and able to pursue their dreams. They are resilient and adaptable and equipped with the educational, ethical, social and emotional competencies to effect significant and lasting change in a changing world.”

Implicit in this vision is the belief that every aspect of the school will need to innovate and adapt in order to keep up with, and stay ahead of our rapidly changing world. If we are to maintain a “higher and wider” trajectory, we need to acknowledge the legacy of excellence while being cognisant of our divided past, and to take the learnings from our history to compel us towards a cohesive future. We must look at ourselves and be honest about where we are now, and then believe in and plan for a future where all boys of the Rondebosch schools continue to contribute to the world after school, with courage and fortitude.

Happy 125th birthday, Rondebosch Boys’ Schools!
