Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
NEIL HAYWARD BRIDGE
Contract: 4♥ by South
Opening Lead: ♠K. What is your plan?
Recommended Line: You can see four losers: one spade, one diamond, and two clubs (unless the suit breaks 3-3, which happens only around one-third of the time). That is a rather measly chance. Did you spot this significantly better line? Win the first trick, and play the ♦Q. They win, and try to cash two spades. You ruff the third spade with the ♥A, since you need to retain both small hearts. You now lead a small trump, which East wins. A club comes back, presumably. You win, lead a trump to dummy, and cash two diamonds to discard two clubs. You ruff a spade or a diamond to get back to hand, draw the remaining trump, and claim ten tricks. Give them one trick to make two in return. Excellent business!
