Protecting the planet with young Romario

- KEAGAN MITCHELL keagan.mitchell@inl.co.za

A LOVE for nature has inspired Romario Valentine, 11, to write his own book.

Protect our Planet – Take action with Romario takes us through key environmental topics, from the importance of clean water and climate change to recycling and reforestation and pollution solutions.

The book also includes upcycling ideas and art activities.

Romario said he hopes his book will educate and inspire children to become eco warriors.

“Hopefully children can find innovative ways to protect nature, plant trees, recycle, reuse and only buy the things they need.

“I believe getting children involved in environmentalism from a young age will help them become better citizens and leave a legacy for future generations,” he said,

The book is aimed for children aged 7 to 12.

Romario said he enjoyed each stage of writing the book, especially the end product.

“It’s a reflection of my creativity.

“I was fortunate to have a great team, along with my parents, who understood my personality and were extremely supportive of my visions and ideas.

“The project taught me the importance of teamwork and having positive people who uplift you,” he said.

Lorienne Brown, who is the children’s book marketer for Penguin Random House (publishers of the book), said Romario was a true inspiration and she hoped that the world takes note of his conservation efforts.

“This book is a must have for all eco-warriors, young and old,” she said.

The book retails at R190 and is available in bookstores nationwide.
