Best keepers in the EPL

- ESHLIN VEDAN eshlin.vedan@inl.co.za

GOALKEEPING is one of the hardest jobs in football. If you make a mistake, it can potentially cost your team and their result more than any other position.

This week, we look at the five best goalkeepers in the Premier League at the moment.

5. Jose Sa (Wolves)

Wolves have not been in good form recently, but Sa has been their one bright spark. He has good distribution skills and sharp reflexes. He has been the most consistent player in the side for a while now. He was an apt replacement for fellow Portugal international Rui Patricio, who left Molineux in 2021.

4. Alisson (Liverpool)

A year ago, many would have had Alisson at number one, but he declines by virtue of his team also declining so far this season. However, he still makes the list. While his defence has been shoddy, Alisson has still commanded his goal well. Of the goals he has conceded so far this season, he could not have done much to halt the vast majority of them. Liverpool will need the Brazilian to be on top of his game if they want to end this season on a high and finish in the top four.

3. Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

A year ago, Ramsdale looked more spectacular between the sticks for Arsenal. This is because he was required to make more saves. So far this season, the Gunners defence has been on point and so he has had far less balls to negotiate with.

Still, Ramsdale has given Arsenal goalkeeping stability, something that they lacked for several years, since the later part of the Arsene Wenger years.

Ramsdale’s presence will be vital if Arsenal are to end up challenging for silverware this season.

2. Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Everton are not in the best of form, but Pickford has maintained strong performances for his club and country. He is likely to be the man that will start in the World Cup for Gareth Southgate’s men. Last month, Pickford made an incredible eight saves to help his side salvage a 0-0 draw against fierce rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Not only will Pickford likely start for England, but he will likely play an important role for Southgate’s men. With England currently not playing well, Pickford heads into the World Cup as one of their players who is more in form than the bulk of the camp.

1. Nick Pope (Newcastle)

Pope has taken his game to another level following his transfer from Burnley to Newcastle.

The Magpies are sixth and if they maintain this level of form, could be in with a shout of challenging for Champions League qualification.

Pope has been rock solid for Newcastle, and in him England have a good back-up to Pickford ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Had Erling Haaland not been as unstoppable for Manchester City as he is now, Pope’s name would have been more talked about in discussions about who has been the best signing of the season so far.
