The S&P Indices Versus Active Funds South Africa Scorecard for the first half of 2022 showed that more equity funds than usual managed to beat the returns of a market index or benchmark. The scorecard tracks the performance of actively managed South African equity funds against their respective indices over one, three, five and 10-year periods. Joseph Nelesen, senior director, index investment strategy at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said: “Our scorecard shows that more funds than usual managed to outperform in a tumultuous South African equity market during H1 2022. Avoidance of some major underperformers and navigating away from the largest stocks in the market would have proved to be helpful.”
