Keep your pets safe on Guy Fawkes
GUY Fawkes may be fun for humans, but there is always a danger your pets could end up wounded or afraid because of the fireworks that are set off.
The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA have some advice on how to keep your pet safe during the scariest moments for them.
AWS spokesperson Allan Perrins said the best thing would be to keep your pets indoors for safety and to keep them calm and well fed.
“Stay at home and keep your pets company. Dogs and puppies are after all our best friends so let’s use the opportunity to show them how much we love them.
“Keep pets indoors or provide them with a kennel or safe space to hide from the noise and flashes.
“Bring bird cages and rabbit hutches indoors.
“Close all doors and curtains and keep your pets away from windows.
“Surround pets with their favourite toys and comforting items.
“Mask the noise of crackers by switching the television or radio on.
“Pets respond well to calming music, so choose an anti-Guy Fawkes playlist and snuggle down together.
“Provide your pet with a collar and ID tag, or better still, have your pet micro-chipped at the Animal Welfare Society for just R100.
“Take your dog or puppy for a walk before sunset to help them relax and sleep better.
“Make sure their tummies are full. “Ask your mum or dad to buy some anti-anxiety medication for your pets to help them stay safe and calm.
“Report the illegal use of fireworks to law enforcement or your nearest police station.
“Call the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa on 082 601 1761 for help with any animals in distress.”
Marisol Gutierrez, communications and fundraising manager of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, warned: “It is illegal for children to use or buy fireworks; most children don’t know this.
“Keep your pets indoors. Loud sounds scare them and make them run in fear. Cats and dogs have super-sensitive hearing, so crackers sound like big bombs to them.
“Ensure they can access a quiet space like a room to help them feel secure.
“To report any cruelty to animals, call the Cape of Good Hope SPCA on 021 700 4158/9 or 083 326 1604 (after hours or emergencies).”
