Alternative energy and insurance

-

My business is suffering due to load-shedding, so I am planning to purchase a generator. I know there are different kinds of generators that can be used for commercial use, but I’m unsure about how they fit in when it comes to my insurance. Can you assist?

Karen Rimmer, head of distribution at PSG Insure, responds:

While there is currently no one-size fitsall solution to insuring alternative energy solutions, the exact cover required will depend on the type of system you have installed.

In the case of portable generators used for commercial purposes, this kind of equipment will be insured under the business all-risk section. Insurance for fitted generators will be included in the fire or buildings sections combined or as part of the homeowners' section.

Due to the complexities surrounding insuring alternative energy systems, as well as the various legislative requirements when it comes to their installation and upkeep, it is recommended that you talk to an insurance adviser to help you make informed decisions for your business.
