Easy-to-make play dough’s lots of fun

- GENEVIEVE SERRA genevieve.serra@inl.co.za

WITH the weather becoming cooler, we need activities to keep us busy indoors and ones which will help educate and stimulate our little brains.

Good old-fashioned play dough can be made using simple ingredients found in your kitchen.

First, get an adult to help you get started.

Play dough is soft and squishy and it does not stick.

It’s also inexpensive and this recipe will be enough to keep a group of children occupied.

What you will need:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 3/4 cup salt

• 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

• 2 cups lukewarm water

• 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works as well)

• Food colouring

• Clear storage plastic bags. What you need to do:

• Place all the dry ingredients into a bowl.

• Stir them together.

• Add the water and oil.

• Stir it all together.

Cook the mixture over a medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. For this you will need the help of an adult.

Remove from heat and then place inside a plastic bag or on to wax paper.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly and then knead until smooth. If you’re adding colours after, divide the dough into balls (for how many colours you want) and then add the dough into the plastic bags.

You can add a few drops and knead it onto the dough while it is in the bag.

Once all the colour/s are mixed, the fun begins.

The dough can be stored for up to three months so best to store it inside the plastic bags.

Keep the dough in a cool place and remember to use it on a surface where mom and dad will not mind you using it.
