Having a pet takes work, care and love
HAVING a pet can be a big responsibility. The SPCA, Cape of Good Hope, has all the information you need to know to care for your pet, whether it be a dog, puppies, cat, kittens, rabbit or birds.
Every pet needs love, care and shelter.
The SPCA emphasises that choosing a pet as a companion is a lifelong commitment. Animals depend on us humans to make sure they have food, water, care and love.
They also need medical care, like we do – veterinary care, check-ups and vaccinations to protect them against sickness and disease. They also require exercise and can become bored if neglected, and overweight.
The SPCA says if you choose a dog as a pet, it is important to know dogs can live for over 13 years, which means it's a lifelong commitment.
“Having a dog can be a wonderful experience and very rewarding, but only if you think through your decision very carefully before you adopt, and ensure you and your family understand and accept all that will be required of you as a responsible, caring dog guardian (owner),” they said.
They also need food portions according to their age and weight.
Fun facts: Dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures and can count up to five.
If you choose a cat, remember it needs to be loved and cared for and can live up to 15 years.
All pets need not only fresh water and food daily, but a warm, sheltered place to sleep.
If you choose a rabbit as a pet, remember that rabbits can live over eight years and they too have feelings, just like you and I.
