Zondi, Van Huyssteen up front in Cranes Trail Race
LINDA Zondi and Carla van Huyssteen increased their leads on the second day of the Old Mutual Wild Series Three Cranes Trail Race yesterday, although Gauteng adventure racer, Ruan van der Merwe, could prove a threat in today’s finale.
“Local hero”, Pietermaritzburg-based Zondi, raced to a second successive stage win over a tough 42km trail over Karkloof Escarpment and down to Bushwillow Park, but although he crossed the line well clear of his rivals, Van der Merwe’s strategy of taking a full 45 minutes at a voluntary rest stop, where the clock stops while you rest, appeared to pay dividends. Zondi paused for just three minutes.
“The guys go out way too hard,” explained Van der Merwe who is determined to push Zondi all the way today.
“This is especially so on the second day when they blow themselves up. The third day is my strength – it’s a very technical downhill route.”
In the women’s race it looks like no-one can stop Hilton-based physiotherapist Van Huyssteen taking the title as she leads by 42 minutes from Fran Diesel.
