Water leak leads to Turffontein meeting being abandoned

Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - FRONT PAGE -

AFTER the running of the fourth race, the Turffontein track manager discovered water leaking out of the main sprinkler supply pipe on the outside of the track at the 650m mark, which was subsequently shut off.

Due to the track being saturated at this point, the inside running rail was then moved to zero to afford a running width of 5,5m.

The Chief Stipendiary Steward duly convened a panel of officials, trainers, jockeys and the track manager to inspect the track.

Taking into consideration the risk of horses running into wet ground at the 650m mark in the next four races which were sprints, the panel decided to abandon the remainder of the meeting( Races 5 to 9).

This meeting could not be moved to the stand-side track as it is undergoing it’s spring treatment. Entries for The Ladies Stakes (Race 6) will be reopened and yesterday’s runners guaranteed a place should they declare to run and the Spring Spree Stakes (Race 7) will be carried over in its entirety to next Saturday, 8 September 2018 at Turffontein.
