Luke Skywalker in the dock

Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - FRONT PAGE - MIKE BEHR

THE force will be revealed in the Cape Town Regional Court tomorrow when Luke Skywalker appears on charges of attempting to murder his wife with his bare hands the night before New Year’s eve 2017.

The trial revolves around a fight in the four-storey West Beach home of Skywalker and his then-wife, Patricia, both highly trained martial arts experts, that lasted for about 30 minutes.

Sources allege the fight erupted while Skywalker was trying to record evidence of infidelity and the transfer of millions of rands in joint marital assets.

Skywalker is best known to the wider public as the face of a popular family restaurant chain 13 years ago.

To his martial arts students at his Tableview Shaolin Kung Fu Institute temple, he is sifu (master) Luke who has been practising his discipline for over three decades.

Patricia has a black belt in karate and began her kung fu training at the temple five years ago. She also went to China with her husband in 2013 to train at the Shaolin Temple and the Wudang Martial Arts Academy at Wudang Mountain which involved rigorous, full contact fighting.

She is also a millionaire import and export businesswoman.

The couple have two teenage children each from previous relationships. They divorced last month after an acrimonious eight month legal battle.

The charge sheet in court this week claims Star Wars namesake Luke Lee Skywalker tried to kill his wife by “repeatedly slapping, punching, strangling and hitting the complainant with fists”. In addition, it alleges Skywalker “intentionally deprived” his wife “of her freedom of movement by keeping her at their home against her will”.

Records show Patricia laid charges of assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm at Table View police station on New Year’s Eve and got a protection order against her husband. He was arrested and later released on R500 bail.

Records also show that Skywalker laid assault charges against his wife and got a protection order preventing her from coming with 100m of him. Records also reveal that in 2015 a third party opened a case of assault against Patricia, but her husband declined to press charges.

Sources close to the case claim that in October 2017 Skywalker was left bleeding after being kicked in the face in an altercation in front of his children.

The trial has been set down for tomorrow, but is likely to be postponed for the defence to present a detailed case believed to include forensic evidence and footage of part of the alleged assault.
