W Cape ANC to finalise names list

Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - METRO - TSHEGO LEPULE

TODAY, the ANC in the Western Cape will finalise the names of potential candidates for MPS and the provincial legislature ahead of next year’s elections.

The Provincial List Conference is expected to get under way in Athlone this morning with delegates from all six regions registering from 7am.

The Western Cape’s list, once consolidated, will be taken by provincial delegates to the ruling party’s list committee which is expected to meet this coming weekend ahead of a National List Conference where the party will name their presidential candidate.

Around 400 delegates from branches, as well as representatives from the party’s alliance partners, their youth, women’s and veterans’ leagues will attend the gathering.

Spokesperson Dennis Cruywagen said today’s meeting would be closed to media and the list would not be shared until the national executive committee approved it.

Provincial secretary Faiez Jacobs said: “This will be an exercise in democracy with the branches deciding which names will go on the lists. We are quite excited.

“Once the process has been finished, the results will be fed to the national list committee and ultimately the national executive committee, which is scheduled to meet next weekend to make a final decision.

“This weekend’s conference, and the process that led to it, are critical for our 2019 election campaign.”
