Mafikizolo to bring the sun down
MAFIKIZOLO have been pioneers for South Africa’s Afro-pop music scene for more than 20 years, but this month will be their first gig at Kirstenbosch. The duo of Nhlanhla Nciza and Theo Kgosinkwe will perform at the botanical garden for the Summer Sunset Concert series where they will be sure to play songs from their last album, 20, which celebrated their years in the music business.
The group’s nine studio albums have helped them to cement their spot as one of Africa’s premier groups and they continue to tour around Africa.
Their style celebrates African cultures as they dabble in Herero headgear from Namibia and the pleated Tsonga skirt from South Africa.
Their performance at Kirstenbosch is sure to be a smorgasbord of sounds and influences of a cosmopolitan pop group if their last album is anything to judge what will be performed.
According to the group’s website, shortly after they shot to fame in the late 1990s they were involved in a serious car accident, which left Nciza hospitalised. When the group started to find their feet and success after the accident, the third member of Mafikizolo, Tebogo Madingoane, was killed by a gunshot wound after a road rage incident. Mafikizolo will perform at Kirstenbosch on January 27. Tickets are available from R150 on webtickets. co.za.
