Ghoemas to rival Grammys

Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - METRO - AMANDA MALIBA

IT’S ALL systems go for the prestigious Ghoema Music Awards which aim to celebrate Mzansi’s Afrikaans musicians.

Chief executive of the awards Heidie Edeling says the preparations are under way for the 8th instalment of the event billed as matching the Grammy Awards standard.

Ghoema is a Malawian word for a celebratory drum, which has its roots in Cape Town, and Edeling says that’s what the awards are about: “There’s a big hype around them and we believe that winning a Ghoema makes a huge difference in an artist’s life.”

Nominations closed on December 14 and the selection process begins tomorrow, followed by the official announcement of the nominees.

The requirement for nomination was that the artist’s material should be at least 60% Afrikaans.”

The ceremony will see 10 performances from top artists who made their mark in 2018. The event will be broadcast live on kykNET (channel 144) for the second year in a row. | Manda Maliba
