Suspect jumps off bridge, dies
POLICE yesterday arrested three vehicle theft suspects and another plunged to his death, during a dramatic earlymorning car chase in Port Elizabeth.
Port Elizabeth police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said good teamwork between members of the flying squad, K9 dog unit and Algoa Park policemen had resulted in the arrest of the suspects, aged between 22 and 31, and the recovery of a vehicle stolen in New Brighton.
The incident took place at about 1am.
“Members from these units were following up on information in the Central area, when one of the members noticed a Toyota Corolla.
“As they attempted to stop the vehicle with blue lights, [it] started speeding away.
“During a high-speed chase the driver of the vehicle attempted on several occasions to force one of the flying squad vehicles off the road,” she said.
“During the chase, shots were fired at the police officers chasing them.
“Despite the road being blocked by the police, the vehicle still managed to speed down Russell Road and entered the freeway facing into oncoming traffic.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the barrier.
“When the vehicle came to a standstill three males and one female jumped out of the car and started running across the busy road.
“The driver of the vehicle attempted to evade arrest by jumping from the bridge, which resulted in his death when he fell from the elevated freeway down to the road below,” Janse van Rensburg said.
“One suspect, aged 23, was chased and arrested and taken to Livingstone Hospital due to injuries sustained.
“Another male suspect, aged 31, and a female suspect, aged 22, were also arrested.”
She said the suspects were facing charges including the possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, reckless and negligent driving and attempted murder, while an inquest docket had been opened around the death of the driver.
“It was later confirmed that one of the suspects was wanted in Kwazakhele on a charge of illegally possessing a firearm, while the Toyota Corolla had been reported as stolen in New Brighton earlier this month,” she said.
The firearm used by one of the suspects during the chase was not recovered.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday. firstname.lastname@example.org PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER
