SABC ‘to retrench hundreds’
The SABC will be laying off hundreds of staff as it struggles to pay service providers.
The Sowetan reports that in a meeting with unions on Thursday‚ SABC management announced that it was forced to retrench employees due to the organisation’s dire financial situation‚ high employee head count and huge salary bill.
A union official confirmed that the SABC was struggling to fund its R1bn-plus annual wage bill.
An internal memo was sent to workers notifying them of impending retrenchments‚ though no further details were released.
