SABC ‘to re­trench hun­dreds’

The SABC will be lay­ing off hun­dreds of staff as it strug­gles to pay ser­vice providers.

The Sowe­tan re­ports that in a meet­ing with unions on Thurs­day‚ SABC man­age­ment an­nounced that it was forced to re­trench em­ploy­ees due to the or­gan­i­sa­tion’s dire fi­nan­cial sit­u­a­tion‚ high em­ployee head count and huge salary bill.

A union of­fi­cial con­firmed that the SABC was strug­gling to fund its R1bn-plus an­nual wage bill.

An in­ter­nal memo was sent to work­ers no­ti­fy­ing them of im­pend­ing re­trench­ments‚ though no fur­ther de­tails were re­leased.
