4 hurt as hijacked car causes pileup
A suspected hijacker was arrested after four people, including a teenager, were injured in a three-vehicle collision in Target Kloof, Walmer, on Friday morning.
A red VW Polo, which was hijacked only minutes before, collided with a Nissan and then rolled across the road into oncoming traffic before being hit by a passing truck.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan Rheeder said the Polo had been hijacked in Parliament Street at about 7.15am.
“A 21-year-old woman was hijacked by four men. The woman was forced out of the car by the suspects, who sped off.
“The car raced towards Target Kloof. A white Nissan vehicle was turning into the road from a side street when the Polo appears to have collided with it.
“A 15-year-old and two parents were in the car. On impact, the Polo veered into the opposite lane, where a passing Isuzu truck collided with it.”
Firefighters were called to cut open the wreckage to remove the suspected hijacker, who was trapped inside.
Rheeder said the family and truck driver had also been taken to hospital.
“The suspect who was in the Polo is in a critical condition and was also rushed to hospital. He will be placed under police guard.”
Rheeder said the remaining three suspects had not been in the car at the time of the crash.
“It is suspected the other three were dropped off somewhere.
“A case of hijacking and reckless and negligent driving has been opened.”–
