Lessons in warfare

Weekend Witness - - Opinion -

IN his recent column, Duma Pewa ( Weekend Witness, April 30) claims that the Zulu taught the British a lesson in warfare at Isandlwana. The only reason they lost that battle was because they were caught unawares, out in the open, and were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. This was a mistake they did not repeat at the battle of Rorke’s Drift, where the Zulu army’s nose was bloodied, and followed up at Ulundi, where its back was broken. But this is never mentioned, as there appears to be collective amnesia among the Zulu regarding these two episodes. J. M. KIRBY
