MUMBAI — Substantially fewer endangered South Asian vultures are dying from a banned painkiller, scientists working in India say, raising hopes that the species can be saved from extinction in the region.

But the researchers warned that diclofenac was still killing too many vultures and more needed to be done to eradicate illegal use of the drug and prevent bird poisonings from creeping back up.

Led by Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the study looked at more than 4 500 liver samples, mainly from cattle and water buffalo carcasses. — Sapa-AFP.
