THE rand re­cov­ered some of its foot­ing against the dol­lar yes­ter­day, trad­ing at 10,8375 to the green­back, a 0,56% gain over Thurs­day’s close in New York.

Gov­ern­ment bonds also nudged higher, with yields on the in­stru­ments due in 2026 and 2015 dip­ping one ba­sis point each to 8,335% and 6,22% re­spec­tively.

Stocks ended mixed yes­ter­day. Kumba Iro Ore gained 3,6% to R460. An­gloGold Ashanti ex­tended re­cent gains, climb­ing 4,45% to R144,50.

Top­40 in­dex rose 0,06% to a record clos­ing high of 41 976,36. The wider Al­lshare in­dex in­dex fell 0,11% to 46 675,88. Re­tail­ers kept a brake on things. Sho­prite sales rose by 9,6% in the six months to end­De­cem­ber. Its shares slid 4,50% to 151,65 rand, mak­ing it the big­gest de­cliner among blue chips. — Reuters.
