THE rand recovered some of its footing against the dollar yesterday, trading at 10,8375 to the greenback, a 0,56% gain over Thursday’s close in New York.
Government bonds also nudged higher, with yields on the instruments due in 2026 and 2015 dipping one basis point each to 8,335% and 6,22% respectively.
Stocks ended mixed yesterday. Kumba Iro Ore gained 3,6% to R460. AngloGold Ashanti extended recent gains, climbing 4,45% to R144,50.
Top40 index rose 0,06% to a record closing high of 41 976,36. The wider Allshare index index fell 0,11% to 46 675,88. Retailers kept a brake on things. Shoprite sales rose by 9,6% in the six months to endDecember. Its shares slid 4,50% to 151,65 rand, making it the biggest decliner among blue chips. — Reuters.
