JOHANNESBURG — The SA Select Women finished third at the Hong Kong Invitational sevens tournament yesterday behind champions Canada and runnersup France to start their season on an encouraging note.

The South Africans started the tournament with an impressive 290 victory against Papua New Guinea in their opening pool fixture, followed by 197 victory against Brazil.

The results put them at the top of Pool B and earned them a place in the semifinals against France. Their hopes of reaching the final, however, were dashed when France proved too strong and emerged 195 victors.

Forced to battle it out against Japan, in the third and fourth place playoff, the women held their nerve and delivered a quality performance to secure a 2810 victory for a thirdplace finish.

This result was a step up from their performance in the last edition of the tournament, where they finished fifth as the Plate Final winners.

Veroeshka Grain was one of the stars for the team on attack, scoring tries in each of their four matches to finish with an impressive five tries. — Sapa.
