Steady batting by Dolphins sees them declare at 329/7

Weekend Witness - - Sport - DAVID KNOWLES

STEADY batting by the Dolphins saw them through to 3297, declaring at 4.40 pm on the second day of their fourday series clash against the Lions at Kingsmead yesterday, with Kyle Abbott (29*) and Matthew Pillans (2*) at the crease.

With the first day on Thursday called off just before 4 pm due to bad light and rain, day two dawned bright and clear, Kingsmead bathed in sunlight as just more than 100 overs were bowled.

At the toss, Stephen Cook called correctly and asked the Dolphins to bat on a green wicket, which eased throughout the day, perhaps a little apprehensive in batting first with four players in his team making their fourday debuts.

SA U19 fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, medium pacer Shaylen Pillay, wicketkeeper Sizwe Mason do and batsman Rassie van der Dussen joined the Dolphins’ quick Matthew Pillans in representing their franchise for the first time in the longest version of the game at domestic level at a time in the season where upcoming talent gets a chance to show their worth.

Imraan Khan and Divan van Wyk got the Dolphins off to a brisk start, putting on 70 for the first wicket before Khan departed for what was at times an attractive 39 before he became becalmed and gave Masondo his maiden catch off Cliffe Deacon. Khaya Zondo joined Van Wyk and the pair took the hosts to 1001 at lunch, Van Wyk on 41 and Zondo 16.

The pair added 68 before Zondo was snaffled by the evergreen Neil McKenzie at slip for 31, Hardus Viljoen adding his second wicket two runs later when Cody Chetty (1) chipped a ball that seemed to stop on him to Devon Conway at cover for a simple catch to have the Dolphins 1403.

Another promising youngster Sarel Erwee, shared a 65run fourth wicket partnership with van Wyk who looked certain to notch his third century of the competition, only to fall seven short when Pillay bagged him for 93 after 277 minutes at the crease. He fell with the total on 205 and Erwee followed 11 runs later for a decent 34, giving Masondo his third catch of the innings. Two of the senior statesmen in the Dolphins side, captain Morne van Wyk and Daryn Smit took their side to within range of the 300run mark adding 76 for the sixth wicket before Smit perished for 29 with the scoreboard showing 2926.

Morne van Wyk looked in good touch and his 57 from 61 balls was a fluid innings, ended with a fantastic catch by McKenzie at slip, the Dolphins 3077. Kyle Abbott showed his skill with bat in hand, notching a quick undefeated 29 from 21 balls with seven fours as the declaration came. Dropped catches from Pillay, Deacon and Conway never helped the Lions’ cause and the wickets were shared between Deacon (348), Viljoen (290), Pillay (145) and Rabada (148). Mention must be made of leg spinner Eddie Leie who sent down 22 overs or no reward in conceding 83 runs.

The Dolphins were hoping for an early breakthrough in what has been a brittle Lions batting lineup at times this season, but Cook (13) and Van der Dussen (26) saw the Lions through to 40 without loss, 289 in arrears, after nine overs when time was called at 5.30 pm.

Abbott, Daryn Dupavillon and Pillans were used by the Dolphins and it’s hoped that the pitch will offer some bite for them in the early session today.
