PI­ETER­MAR­ITZBURG r es­i­dent V in­cent Am­brose won the prize for best orchid on dis­pla y at this y ear’s G ar­den Show in the cit y.

He only be­gan cul­ti­vat­ing or­chids as a hobb y nine y ears ag o.

Am­brose’s priz e­win­ning or chid is the Casa de Luna — the na­tional flower of Costa Rica — w hich he gr ew fr om a seedling .

No stranger to awards, he was recog­nised for hav­ing the best On­cid­ium on dis­play las t y ear.

Am­brose, who worked in the print­ing in­dus­try and is now re­tired, said he was al­ways a k een g ar­dener.

His int er­est in or chids gr ew aft er a friend gave him a plant that w as sup­posed to bloom once a year. He said it never bloomed in all the time he had it. “I started read­ing up about this or ­ lec­tion of close to a thou­sand or­chids. chid and nur­tur­ing it. Since then he has ac­cu­mu­lated a co­late con­di­tions and im­pro­vises where he Wa­ter can.

His in­ter­est has grown to such an ex­tent that he is no w learn­ing t o be an orchid judg e.

He is a mem­ber of the Pi­eter­mar­itzburg Orchid So­ci­ety and is of­ten in­vited to give talks on the cul­ti­va­tion of th­ese ex­otic plant s.
