PIETERMARITZBURG r esident V incent Ambrose won the prize for best orchid on displa y at this y ear’s G arden Show in the cit y.
He only began cultivating orchids as a hobb y nine y ears ag o.
Ambrose’s priz ewinning or chid is the Casa de Luna — the national flower of Costa Rica — w hich he gr ew fr om a seedling .
No stranger to awards, he was recognised for having the best Oncidium on display las t y ear.
Ambrose, who worked in the printing industry and is now retired, said he was always a k een g ardener.
His int erest in or chids gr ew aft er a friend gave him a plant that w as supposed to bloom once a year. He said it never bloomed in all the time he had it. “I started reading up about this or lection of close to a thousand orchids. chid and nurturing it. He is a member of the Pietermaritzburg Orchid Society and is often invited to give talks on the cultivation of these exotic plant s.
