IF you’ve r ecently been r etrenched or were handed a re­trench­ment let­ter, here are some point s t o c on­sider t o as sist you thr ough this dif­fi­cult time. GET E VERY BEN­E­FIT If the c om­pany off ered fr ee health screen­ings or dent al plans, then use them while you can. Also, if your boss of­fers to give you a re­fer­ral, get the re­fer­ral fr om him or her no w, not lat er. PRI­ORI­TISE AND C UT B ACK You should t ake the fi ve most im­por­tant things and cut back fi­nan­cially on ev­ery­thing else. T his will lead t o le ss stress while you sear ch f or a ne w job . KNOW THE CRI­SIS POINT ON THE C ALENDAR Don’t take the first job that comes along if you don’t have to. For ex­am­ple, you might not w ant t o mus­cle aside a 1 7year­old for a pizza job. Also, you should not use loans to try to ex­tend the cri­sis point. This will just make the sit­u­a­tion worse and put y ou int o debt. UP­DATE Y OUR C V This would be a gr eat time t o pol­ish your CV. Since you have the time, use it wisely as a bet­ter, more im­proved CV will in­crease your chances of find­ing a job. KNOW THE JOB Y OU W ANT NE XT Take the time to as­sess what you liked and dis­liked about your pre­vi­ous job. If you’re for­tu­nate enough to be in a po­si­tion where you don’t have to take the first job that’s of­fered, then try to fig­ure out which job would make you hap­pier. DON’T P ANIC A pos­i­tive at­ti­tude and hard work will get y ou thr ough this t ough time.
