IF you’ve r ecently been r etrenched or were handed a retrenchment letter, here are some point s t o c onsider t o as sist you thr ough this difficult time. GET E VERY BENEFIT If the c ompany off ered fr ee health screenings or dent al plans, then use them while you can. Also, if your boss offers to give you a referral, get the referral fr om him or her no w, not lat er. PRIORITISE AND C UT B ACK You should t ake the fi ve most important things and cut back financially on everything else. T his will lead t o le ss stress while you sear ch f or a ne w job . KNOW THE CRISIS POINT ON THE C ALENDAR Don’t take the first job that comes along if you don’t have to. For example, you might not w ant t o muscle aside a 1 7yearold for a pizza job. Also, you should not use loans to try to extend the crisis point. This will just make the situation worse and put y ou int o debt. UPDATE Y OUR C V This would be a gr eat time t o polish your CV. Since you have the time, use it wisely as a better, more improved CV will increase your chances of finding a job. KNOW THE JOB Y OU W ANT NE XT Take the time to assess what you liked and disliked about your previous job. If you’re fortunate enough to be in a position where you don’t have to take the first job that’s offered, then try to figure out which job would make you happier. DON’T P ANIC A positive attitude and hard work will get y ou thr ough this t ough time.
