GLE­NEA­GLES — Europe pro­duced a stir­ring fight back t o win thr ee and halve one of their R yder C up f our­somes mat ches ag ainst the U nited States and take a 5­3 lead after a typ­i­cally tense, fluc­tu­at­ing and hugely en­ter­tain­ing fir st da y y es­ter­day.

Lee West­wood, play­ing his ninth Ry­der Cup, and rookie Jamie Donaldson played some of the best golf of the day to beat J im F uryk and M att K uchar 2­up in the alt er­nate shot f or­mat.

Justin Rose and Hen­rik Sten­son got their sec­ond point with an im­pres­sive two­up vict ory o ver Hunt er M ahan and Zach John­son hav­ing ear­lier ham­mered B ubba W at­son and W ebb Simp­son 5 & 4 .

Vic­tor Dubuis son, another debu­tant, and Graeme McDow­ell were too strong for Phil Mick­el­son and Kee­gan Bradley, who had beaten world num­bers one and thr ee Rory McIlroy and Ser­gio Gar­cia on the las t hole in the four­balls.

Europe’s s trongest­look­ing t eam were off the p ace al­mos t all da y, but fin­ished with t wo bril­liant bir dies on 17 and 18 to sal­vage a half against rookie Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler, who them­selves came fr om three­down to halve with Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer in the morn­ing .

The U.S, seek­ing a first win on for­eign soil sinc e 1 993, had t aken the morn­ing f our­balls 2½ point s t o 1½ after the gust­ing con­di­tions left many play­ers s trug­gling.

That group did not in­clude Amer­i­can rookie duo Pa­trick Reed and Jor­dan Spi­eth, h ow­ever, a s t hey si­lenced the usu­ally ebullient Ian Poul­ter and Scot­tish new boy Stephen Gal­lacher with a crush­ing 5 & 4 win.
