A LOCAL man is fighting for his life in hospital after he and his pregnant girlfriend were attacked by three men in Ashburton on Thursday night.

Tebogo (33) and his girlfriend Bonisiwe (27), who asked to only be referred to by their first names, were walking from Pick ‘n Pay to their home along Pope Ellis Road in Ashburton at around 6.30 pm when they were ambushed by the men.

“The men came out of nowhere and we heard them say they wanted to take me with them. Tebogo told them that I was with him and one guy grabbed him. Tebogo pushed the man away and they all started hitting him,” said Bonisiwe, who is three months pregnant.

She said they were about two minutes away from their home when they were attacked. They managed to walk to their gate but their assailants followed them.

“The gate is a bit secluded. When we got there one of the guys drew a knife and started stabbing Tebogo. The other guy had something that looked like an iron rod that he used to hit Tebogo.”

Bonisiwe said she can’t remember what happened next, but she woke up in hospital with stab wounds to her head.

Midlands EMS paramedics said Tebogo sustained multiple cuts to the head and his stomach was cut open. The couple was rushed to hospital.

Bonisiwe said her baby was not affected and she was released from hospital yesterday afternoon. When she spoke to Weekend Witness she had not seen Tebogo since the ordeal but was told he was still in a very critical condition and was in the intensive care unit awaiting surgery.

“I’m just glad he is still alive. We almost died for nothing. I am still very scared.

“I’ll never walk outside at night again,’’ said Bonisiwe.

Spokesperson for the Alexandra Road police station, Captain Kholeka Mhlongo, said the motive of the attack was still unknown but police believed it was robbery.

Mhlongo said a 19-year-old man was arrested in the vicinity of the scene and will appear in court on Monday. The other two suspects are still on the run. • [email protected]
