Dur­ing the 2017/18 fes­tive sea­son, pedes­trian deaths were the big­gest contributo­r to the pe­riod’s road death toll. AD­VO­CATE Jo­han Jonck of Ar­rive Alive said the rea­son for th­ese ac­ci­dents are two-fold and can range from badly lit roads to mo­torists who are not fo­cused.

“Mo­torists are not fo­cus­ing enough on the roads, maybe trav­el­ling at times when they are fa­tigued and are not see­ing the pedes­tri­ans.

“At other times, pedes­tri­ans are not mak­ing them­selves seen … we also find pedes­tri­ans cross­ing over roads they should not be cross­ing over,” he said.

Jonck said while driv­ers should limit cell phone use while driv­ing, pedes­tri­ans should also limit dis­trac­tive ac­tiv­i­ties.

He said the rise in the use of per­sonal elec­tron­ics was the main in­gre­di­ent in the recipe for dis­as­ter.
