Mascara that’ll survive the elements
Can they survive sun, showers and sweltering commutes? Fiona Mckim reports
BEST FOR: VERSATILITY By Terry Lash-expert Twist Brush Double Eect Mascara,
Looks Its ingenious two-step rotating wand might seem intimidating to use at first, but one twist later, and my lashes have met their new best friend.
Lashes The straight brush gives lashes great length and curl, while the curved version separates hairs and gives them a good dose of volume – it’s the best of both worlds! The buildable formula also hydrates and prevents breakage.
Lasted Stayed intact through one of those ‘four-seasonsin-one-day’ kind of days.
BEST FOR: GLAMOUR Elizabeth Arden Standing Ovation Mascara,
Looks Like the mascara version of a go-to LBD. It has a larger-than-normal brush and buttery, lash-loving formula.
Lashes Big, bold and ohso glamorous, with a black pigment that’s perfectly sooty.
Lasts The formula is fairly loose so it needs a moment to set, but two swift coats later and I saw no need for falsies – my lashes were ultra lustrous, plus zero flaking or clumping.
BEST FOR: LIFT YSL Beauté The Curler,
Looks The longest brush of the lot in an elegant arc.
One side of the wand loads on product, while the other combs through and curls.
Lashes In one word: wow. Full-on flutter, including inner-corner lashes I didn’t even know existed. Length that I’d only previously been able to achieve with glue and false lashes.
Lasts Amazingly well considering this doesn’t even bill itself as budgeproof. Survived a humid Uber commute and 12-hour day, yet slipped o easily with micellar water. I think I’m in love.
BEST FOR: VOLUME Avon Mark Big & Extreme Mascara,
Looks Easy to fish out of your make-up bag thanks to its brightly coloured, summery packaging and satisfyingly chunky shape.
Lashes A good balance of length and volume as the fluy, widely spaced bristles pick up plenty of formula then load it on cleanly and precisely.
Lasted From breakfast till bedtime – bar the odd smudge. Full disclosure: I tested it during a heatwave, through which my lids could probably have dissolved glossy enamel paint.
BEST FOR: FLUTTER Smashbox Super Fan Fanned-out Mascara,
Looks The sleek scarlet tube is pretty sexy, and the flexible rubber wand bends to grip every tiny lash.
Lashes Sophisticated, separated and very fluttery. If you need mega volume, this isn’t the one; if you’d rather look eortlessly chic, then it probably is.
Lasts Entirely water-resistant (and I gave my face a really good dunking), a vigorous eye rub caused a tiny smear or two, but this was also the easiest to remove, which makes a fair trade in my book. w&h
