Our blue heaven An up­dated beach­front home

This lov­ingly up­dated beach­front home al­lows the own­ers and their guests to re­lax in ab­so­lute style and com­fort

When Grant Smith and Mal­colm Os­borne bought this ocean-view prop­erty as a hol­i­day home in 2012, they knew it had the po­ten­tial to be­come some­thing re­ally spe­cial.

Built in the 1950s and added to over the years, the three-bed­room house was well-loved but run­down, and failed to make the most of its sea-fac­ing lo­ca­tion. Af­ter spend­ing week­ends in the house for a year, get­ting a feel for its qual­i­ties of space and light, Grant and Mal­colm felt they needed a bet­ter con­nec­tion be­tween the home and its en­vi­ron­ment, and a lay­out that was more con­ducive to re­lax­ing and en­ter­tain­ing friends.

The com­plete re­fresh in­cluded the trans­for­ma­tion of the kitchen, bath­rooms and ve­randa. A sep­a­rate, self-con­tained granny flat was also re­con­fig­ured into a guest suite (with one bed­room and an ex­tra bed in the liv­ing area) and then in­cor­po­rated into the main space.

Glass stack­ing doors were in­stalled to pro­vide gen­er­ous views and easy ac­cess to the beach. At the rear of the house, an al fresco area was re­vamped by con­vert­ing the ex­ist­ing laun­dry into an out­door kitchen with a braai.
