‘We’ve visited the same holiday spot for 34 years’

“When I was three, my folks invested in timeshare at Plett’s Beacon Island Resort. We lived in Port Elizabeth at the time, and they wanted to find a special family holiday nook. From the moment we spent our first summer at this gorgeous hotel on the edge of the beachfront, we never looked back.
It’s been our holiday ‘home’ for the last 34 years, both for December and mid-year breaks. When we were little, my three siblings and I were happy to double up in a four-sleeper room with our parents – it was part of the adventure! But when we hit our teens, my folks started booking a second room. We always enjoyed proper old-fashioned holidays as kids, hiking Robberg Nature Reserve and collecting pansy shells on the beach. The disco-dancing contests and bingo quizzes kept us entertained in our later years, and we have all made lifelong friendships with other families who regularly visited Beacon Island like we did. I don’t think there was ever a dull moment.
It’s become more sentimental to us, because my brother proposed to his now wife in the Sea Lounge in 1998, and this year we’ll be celebrating his 50th there, too! The holidays clearly left their mark. Last year, my mom and I took my son there while I was on maternity leave, and he got to have his first swim in the indoor pool where I played as a child. It was a moment I’ll cherish, and I’m excited to give him the chance to make his own memories at Beacon Island.” >>
