Thesen Islands’ Treasure

It’s renowned for its spectacular home-baked pastries and breads, but I was thrilled to find the restaurant menu so diverse and fresh, offering dishes like teriyaki aubergine (a must!), sole with citrus and fennel and bountiful vegan salads. I love the 100 percent rye made from organic dark rye grown in Ceres – just an example of how every ingredient is carefully and lovingly sourced. “île de païn, which I run with my husband, Markus, is where I spend most of my day, where I eat at least two meals a day, where we see friends and family and where we share what we love to do. It has become an integral part of our lives over the past 15 years,” says chef Liezie Mulder. Every time I’m in Knysna, I nab a table at around 10am, have coffee with a slice of fresh rye and jam, linger and then have early lunch with a glass of wine. The courtyard is marvellous in summer, just make sure you get there early to secure a table. iledepain.co.za
