It’s renowned for its spec­tac­u­lar home-baked pas­tries and breads, but I was thrilled to find the restau­rant menu so di­verse and fresh, of­fer­ing dishes like teriyaki aubergine (a must!), sole with citrus and fen­nel and boun­ti­ful ve­gan sal­ads. I love the 100 per­cent rye made from or­ganic dark rye grown in Ceres – just an ex­am­ple of how ev­ery in­gre­di­ent is care­fully and lov­ingly sourced. “île de païn, which I run with my hus­band, Markus, is where I spend most of my day, where I eat at least two meals a day, where we see friends and fam­ily and where we share what we love to do. It has be­come an in­te­gral part of our lives over the past 15 years,” says chef Liezie Mul­der. Ev­ery time I’m in Knysna, I nab a ta­ble at around 10am, have cof­fee with a slice of fresh rye and jam, linger and then have early lunch with a glass of wine.
