OLD FAITHFULS
If you can’t get to New York, get to the new location of this neighbourhood deli. The latke benedict is crispy potato heaven, while the bagels and various schmears will have you spoilt for choice.
The blintzes go quickly, so make sure you get yours.
For addictive gelato: MORO GELATO
This eminently Instagrammable pastel-pretty space is the spot if you’re after authentic gelato in myriad flavours. Co-owner Stefano Moro’s nonna taught him the craft when he was a child in Liguria in Italy, and he has teamed up with Heine van Wyk to bring gelato artigianale to Cape Town. Take your pick from the likes of the popular Marchese – Tahitian vanilla with macadamia butter and caramelised almonds – white mint, ricotta and fig (in season), halva and an excellent pistacchio, among many other choice-anxiety-inducing options. There are also vegan flavours including chocolate, hazelnut, peanut, and mango and lemon sorbetti. Take a box home if you can’t decide.
For Brazilian treats: BRIGADEIRO BRAZIL
A brigadeiro is a traditional Brazilian sweet, similar to a truffle, made using condensed milk and chocolate, sometimes flavoured with almond, peanut, Nutella, churros, coconut, plum and strawberry, to name just a few. Sergio and Alessandra Masiero opened this little slice of South America just under a year ago, selling these Brazilian delicacies, as well as savoury treats such as esfirras, similar to a samoosa, but baked, not fried, and coxinhas, which consist of chopped or shredded chicken covered in dough and fried.
Chris “Chaps” Taylor and Vimbai Mutsikadowo are the smiling faces behind the counter, helping newbies to choose from the dizzying selection and making them comfortable in the pretty-in-pink interior. Pair your choice with a coffee or fruit tea.
