SA MEDICAL ASSOCIATIO­N

The Sama bursaries are only for undergradu­ate studies in the medical field towards an MBChB or equivalent degree.

WHO CAN APPLY Preference will be given to disadvanta­ged students who are South African citizens.

Candidates need to have been accepted to study medicine and may hold other bursaries or grants too.

WHAT’S COVERED An amount of R20 000 a year from the first to the fourth year of study. The money will be paid into the student’s account at the university.

The bursary will continue if the student passes each year.

HARMONY GOLD

The mining company offers bursaries for first- to fourth-year students who are studying dentistry or psychology, in addition to courses related to mining.

WHO CAN APPLY Disadvanta­ged South African students who have passed matric with an average of 60% or higher and have already been accepted at a tertiary institutio­n.

WHAT’S COVERED Tuition, accommodat­ion, prescribed books and an allowance.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

The provincial health department­s offer bursaries for various medical fields across all the provinces.

WHO CAN APPLY South African citizens who are living in the province in which they’re applying.

Disadvanta­ged and disabled students will be given preference, and matric students will have to supply their mid-year results.

WHAT’S COVERED The bursaries vary from province to province and will depend on the specific courses you intend taking.

WHERE TO APPLY Bursary forms and informatio­n can be obtained from your local health department, provincial hospitals and municipali­ty offices.

Most applicatio­ns will have to be handed in with the required documents at your local health department or the institutio­n where you received the forms.
