EDUCATION & ACADEMIA

Education can be a lifelong thing, and jobs in education are far from limited to teaching and lecturing.

LECTURER

Lecturers teach academic and vocational subjects and conduct research at universities and other tertiary institutions. Their work may be published in books and journals.

Their responsibilities may include tutoring students in small groups, supervising students’ research and managing research budgets.

You’ll need at least a bachelor’s degree and postgraduate qualification (often a PhD) related to the subject or field in which you intend lecturing.

Extra courses in teaching, or experience gained as a student – by taking on teaching duties or as a graduate teaching assistant – will be useful too.

››EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The required matric subjects will vary, depending on your intended area of specialisation, but mathematics and languages will almost certainly be necessary.

Further study will vary depending on the industry in which you’re working. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree. Qualifications in training and development, organisational development and human resources management are an advantage when applying for a job.

For people working in this field, experience is essential for advancement. For entry-level positions, many employers prefer graduates who have some experience with the business, either gained in a work-study programme or an internship.
