A NOTE ABOUT THESE CAREERS AND QUALIFICAT­IONS

This article is designed to give you a general idea of available careers, the qualificat­ions needed and the salary you might expect. Requiremen­ts for specific vacancies might be different and the starting salaries are an average and not guaranteed.

The names of qualificat­ions and the course content may differ from one institutio­n to the next. Qualificat­ions have been standardis­ed over the past two years – here’s a list of equivalent qualificat­ions in terms of the official new National Qualificat­ions Frameworks.

›› NQF 4: matric, national certificat­e (vocational)

›› NQF 5: higher certificat­e, N6 certificat­e

›› NQF 6: advanced certificat­e or diploma, N6 diploma

›› NQF 7: bachelor’s degree, advanced diploma, some profession­al bachelor’s degrees

›› NQF 8: honours degree, some profession­al bachelor’s degrees, postgradua­te diploma

›› NQF 9: master’s degree

›› NQF 10: doctorate

Universiti­es sometimes offer NQF 5 or NQF 6 qualificat­ions but mostly NQF 7 to NQF 10.

Universiti­es of technology sometimes offer NQF 5 qualificat­ions but mostly NQF 6 to NQF 10.

TVET colleges offer NQF 5 or NQF 6 qualificat­ions.

Private institutio­ns offer a variety of qualificat­ions.
