The names of qualifications and the course content may differ from one institution to the next. Qualifications have been standardised over the past two years – here’s a list of equivalent qualifications in terms of the official new National Qualifications Frameworks.
›› NQF 4: matric, national certificate (vocational)
›› NQF 5: higher certificate, N6 certificate
›› NQF 6: advanced certificate or diploma, N6 diploma
›› NQF 7: bachelor’s degree, advanced diploma, some professional bachelor’s degrees
›› NQF 8: honours degree, some professional bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diploma
›› NQF 9: master’s degree
›› NQF 10: doctorate
Universities sometimes offer NQF 5 or NQF 6 qualifications but mostly NQF 7 to NQF 10.
Universities of technology sometimes offer NQF 5 qualifications but mostly NQF 6 to NQF 10.
TVET colleges offer NQF 5 or NQF 6 qualifications.
Private institutions offer a variety of qualifications.
