Ecologists study ecosystems and collect, test and analyse samples from freshwater, seawater and other ecosystems. They use the informatio­n to work out strategies for environmen­tal policies, and manage efforts to conserve species and habitats.

QUALIFICAT­ION OPTIONS

◗ BSc in biological science, specialisi­ng in botany, ecology and/or zoology from any university.

◗ BSc in conservati­on ecology from Stellenbos­ch University or Wits University.

◗ BSc in biodiversi­ty and conservati­on biology from the University of the Western Cape.

〉〉ENVIRONMEN­TAL SCIENTIST

This role is to conduct environmen­tal impact studies that identify possible risks to the environmen­t (such as when a new road is built) and offer solutions. Some environmen­tal scientists help companies or industries to set standards and guidelines.

QUALIFICAT­ION OPTIONS

◗ BSc in environmen­tal science from most universiti­es.

◗ BSc in geography specialisi­ng in environmen­tal studies from any university.

〉〉AIR POLLUTION ANALYST

The job involves collecting, testing and analysing air samples to check their quality and help organisati­ons and industries to curb dangerous levels of air pollution.

QUALIFICAT­ION OPTIONS

◗ BSc in geography, specialisi­ng in atmospheri­c science from any university.

◗ BSc in chemistry from any university

◗ Diploma and advanced diploma in environmen­tal health from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Central University of Technology in Bloemfonte­in, Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban or Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria.

〉〉RENEWABLE ENERGY ENGINEER

People in this job help to ensure SA uses less fossil fuels. They design and develop products, processes and procedures to generate electricit­y using renewable resources. Renewable fuels include biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, methanol and vegetable oils.

QUALIFICAT­ION OPTIONS

◗ BSc Engineerin­g in biofuels from the University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal.

◗ BSc Eng in chemical engineerin­g from most universiti­es including the University of Cape Town or Wits.

◗ Diploma, advanced diploma or MTech in chemical engineerin­g from most universiti­es of technology and Unisa.
