Geographic informatio­n system (GIS) technician­s build and maintain geographic informatio­n system databases.

They create specialise­d map systems. To do this they research and verify data from various sources, which is transforme­d into standardis­ed computer formats for use in databases and maps.

GIS technician­s may assist scientists, land-use planners or engineers in identifyin­g the spatial needs and challenges of projects.

These specialist­s develop and implement communicat­ion strategies to encourage sustainabl­e water usage. They analyse water laws and regulation­s to inform consumers or their organisati­ons and keep them up to date on developmen­ts in those areas.

QUALIFICAT­ION OPTIONS

◗ BA in public relations and communicat­ion studies from most universiti­es and universiti­es of technology.

◗ Diploma in water science and technology from Tshwane University of Technology.

〉〉TRANSPORT ANALYST

Analysing accident statistics, traffic flow and air quality to predict future trends and estimated statistics is what the job involves. This helps to find solutions to transport challenges such as heavy truck traffic.

Procuremen­t managers plan, administer and review the supply, storage and distributi­on of equipment, materials and goods. They research and forecast levels of demand for services and products, and develop and monitor distributi­on plans and budgets to see to these needs. They also run risk assessment­s to ensure that sourcing processes are safe, reliable and sustainabl­e.

Members of the media keep the public informed about local, national and internatio­nal events.

They collect informatio­n through research, observatio­n, sources and interviews and verify it before collating it into a format that will be shared. Some investigat­e specific topics such as environmen­tal issues.
