I’M A fan of technology and try to do everything I can online. I know all the various things to look out for when I do online shopping and generally feel there’s great security in the products I use, especially apps. That’s why I find it so alarming – and baffling, to be honest – when I read stories like the one on page 8. Victims of cyber crime have found their accounts cleaned out despite not clicking on dodgy links in emails or giving their passwords to anyone.

SIM-swops are at the heart of the success of these attacks and are a cause for concern. I really hope that the banks and cellphone companies involved are doing everything they can to get to the heart of the matter.

This is 2017, after all, and consumers will not put up with anything less than absolute certainty. If you’ve been a victim of cybercrime, let us know (letters@you.co.za) and your story could appear on you.co.za.

Meanwhile, if your cellphone suddenly loses signal for no reason, check it out immediately.
