DAMAGE AND JOY THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN

Formed by Scottish brothers Jim and William Reid in 1983, these indie-rock pioneers have had plenty of ups and downs over the years. This, their seventh album, however sees them on top form – as is clear from opening track Amputation, which sets the tone with roaring guitars to the fore. The excellent The Two Of Us shows another side to the band, reminding of the Reids’ side projects Sister Vanilla and Freeheat. It’s also good to hear their sister, Linda, joining Jim on vocals. Damage And Joy doesn’t quite top their classic Psychocandy (1985), but it’s an impressive reminder of just how good they can be. – JACQUES MYBURGH
