How to choose the right appliance

Buying new appliances can be daunting. Here’s how to choose energy-efficient and water-saving ones for your home

- BY KHATIJA NXEDLANA

GAS or electric? Front or top-loader? Singleor double-door fridge? Making a decision about an appliance that will be in your life for longer than some relationships can be quite a daunting task. Add in worries about stretching your money and saving water and electricity, and the task can seem impossible.

But we all know we simply must save water, especially if we live in drought-stricken parts of the country – which is why so many people want to switch to appliances that can address this need.

And when it comes to electricity – well, with tariffs set to increase by as much as 20% we’re going to be more cashstrapped than ever.

But there are things you can look out for when buying new appliances that can help you save water and electricity – as well as a few pretty pennies.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Look at the energy-efficiency rating when buying an appliance, says James Reeler, land and climate project manager at the World Wildlife Fund South Africa. The higher the rating, the more energy you save – and the label should be upfront and obvious.

Certain appliances also carry waterwise stickers.

Always be clear with salespeople when shopping, says Michael Klopper, appliance buyer and manager of Kloppers furniture stores.

Tell them you want the most cost-efficient, water-efficient appliance and ask them to show you proof that it is what they say it is.

Also, go online and look for reviews of the particular make and model – it’s another way to see if the product really does save water and/or electricity.
