SO EMOJI-NAL!

-

There’s a plethora of emojis coming to a device near you in 2018 – but one of the proposed new images already has users taking to Twitter to voice their opinion of it.

When the Unicode Consortium – the powers that be when it comes to emojis – announced its list of 157 images to be released in 2018, eagle-eyed seafood fans noticed something amiss with the lobster emoji.

The little red crustacean, it seems, is malformed. Lobsters have 10 legs (including their claws) but the emoji has only eight. Naturally, the error caused the Twitterverse to go into overdrive. “The #lobsteremoji is happening!” the annual Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, USA, tweeted from its official Twitter account. “Hopefully the final version will have the right number of legs.” Unicode didn’t turn a blind eye. “We heard you. We made some mistakes. And we’re fixing them,” said Jeremy Burge, chief emoji officer at Emojipedia. Which they’ve done (LEFT). As part of the overhaul, changes were also made to the proposed DNA and skateboard emojis. Apparently the latter was a rendering of a “mid-’80s beginner skateboard”, pro boarder Tony Hawk told New York Magazine – and he was invited to help design the new board (BELOW). “No more grip tape, no gap in the middle, hopefully more 2018 than 1985,” Burge wrote in a blog post.

The DNA emoji also had to be revamped after users noted the double helix was “twisted the wrong way”, according to science and technology website Gizmodo. SOURCES: EMOJIPEDIA, TECHCRUNCH, PRESS HERALD, GIZMODO
