Listeriosis crisis

-

The listeriosis in South Africa is a graphic reminder of how vulnerable humankind is to infectious diseases.

Through the centuries man’s greatest threat often hasn’t been natural disasters or warfare, but the microscopic creatures with which we share the planet. When epidemics break out, man has often been able to do little else but let the diseases run their deadly course.

We tend to ignore history. We forget what happened only a few decades ago. We lack perspective, our sense of history is skewed and our understanding of the relative nature of threats is lacking. Because of this we’re ill prepared to face the coming biological storm.

Nature constantly throws challenges at us in the form of infectious diseases. The devastating diseases, such as ebola, that periodically emerge remind us how thin the veneer is that separates our hi-tech society from disaster.

Most people assume medical science will shield us from the disasters of previous centuries. We’re more vulnerable than we suppose. FAROUK ARAIE, BENONI

Imagine millions of garbage bags on pavements and rubbish dumps containing thrown-away processed meats for fear they contain listeriosis! It’s a stray dog’s feast. FREE FOR ALL, SMS I don’t know what the answer to the listeriosis crisis is but people mustn’t just toss these processed meats in the bin. Think of the many people who scavenge for food and perhaps haven’t even heard about this outbreak.

Then there are the risks to animals and birds. Perhaps authorities can arrange a drop-off point in each area. Thereafter the food should be incinerated. MAKE A PLAN, STRAND
