WALLY RHOODE
Bodyguard
We were on our way to a meeting in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, from the Ritz Hotel, [when] in the middle of the highway the whole convoy suddenly stopped. I jumped out because I was the planning officer.
Madiba calls me to the car and says, “Where’s Jeremy [Vearey, another of his bodyguards]?” I said, “Why, Tata?” “No, Jeremy must give me my change.” Then I called Jeremy and . . . Madiba said, “Jeremy, next time when you buy me a newspaper put the change also with the newspaper.”
