RICHTERSVELD CULTURAL AND BOTANICAL LANDSCAPE
This mountainous desert region in the Northern Cape, home to the Nama people for 2 000 years, has a rich, diverse botanical landscape that’s been shaped by the seasonal grazing of the Namas’ livestock.
These feeding patterns helped sustain the biodiversity of the area in a millennia-long process “which [has] ensured the protection of the succulent Karoo vegetation and demonstrates a harmonious interaction between people and nature”, said Unesco in 2007 when the area became a World Heritage Site.
