Have your houseplants’ leaves lost their shine? Eat a banana then use the peel to clean them. Wipe down each leaf with the inside of the peel for shine and a pleasant smell. Old, dried-up banana peels could also double as an effective water purification system, according to a report published in America’s Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research journal.

Banana peels have a high concentration of nitrogen, sulphur and carboxylic acids which bind toxic metals together and remove them from the water. The peels work as well as most man-made options.
