BUMBLING BORIS: IS HE TRUMP 2.0?

-

With his wild mop of hair, Boris Johnson (BELOW) bears a startling resemblance to Donald Trump. In his role as foreign minister he struck up a firm friendship with the US president – so no one was surprised when Trump spoke up in his support after his sudden resignation.

“I like Boris Johnson. I’ve always liked him,” Trump said ahead of his recent trip to the UK. “He’s been very nice to me. Very supportive. Maybe we’ll speak to him when I get over there.”

With May under fire the UK has been on tenterhooks, waiting to see if the well-connected, ambitious and charismatic Johnson – or BoJo, as the 54-year-old is affectionately known – would mount a leadership challenge.

Having started out in journalism he moved into politics after being fired from British newspaper The Times for making up quotes in the stories he wrote.

In 2001 he became an MP and from 2008 served two terms as a popular mayor of London. Back then he was seen as being fairly progressive, which is why everyone was stunned when upon his return to parliament in 2016 he became the face of Brexit, using his charisma and ability to deliver catchy soundbites that struck a chord with voters.

But as foreign minister he’s moved from one blunder to the next. In 2016 he caused waves when he referred to Africa as “that country”, and last year he was widely condemned after he joked that the Libyan city of Sirte would have a bright future as a luxury resort once they “cleared the dead bodies away”.

Once he was adored by voters but now only 11% of British people say they’d like to see him become prime minister.

So May can probably rest easy – even if BoJo really wants her job he probably wouldn’t get it. But hey, people made similar predictions about Trump and the presidency, and look where he is now.
